2Freezes while playing disks  Feb 24, 2010
Much like the experience of other users I love the streaming Pandora and Netflix, both of which I use quite frequently. These features both work flawlessly and was the main selling point. When it comes to disk playback the system will eventually freeze partway through the disk. Often if I simply wait for a bit, it'll start playing again but the freezes will become more and more frequent. I suspected overheating but the unit has sufficient airflow all around.

I sent it back to Samsung for RMA repair. The hardware was warranted but not the labor so I spent another $60 beyond shipping for them to replace the mainboard. The new mainboard did the same exact thing but I've given up and don't want to fight Samsung support. I'd rather buy another unit from another manufacturer instead of a Samsung since the problems I experienced seem to be fairly universal among Samsung's blu-ray players given the reviews that I've read.

1Here's a helpful "Troubleshooting Guide"  Jan 29, 2010
Where to begin: The HD audio drops out when you switch chapters (pause button twice makes it come back). The video skips regularly. The Netflix streaming feature regularly reports that my account has been hacked and I have to reset the player (FF button for 5 seconds) and re-activate it via my account online. Nothing has been hacked, it's just another glitch. Even though it will play DVD's fine, it stops playing all Blu-ray disks (just says, "Disk Cannot be played"). I have to unplug it and hold the power button for 15 seconds, then plug it in. I have the setup options memorized because I have to re-program all of them with every reset (nearly every time I use it). Samsung issued a firmware revision that made Netflix streaming lock-up and had to issue the fix firmware a few days later. Meanwhile many people bricked their player trying to update the firmware (twice). Those people (and many others) were told they would have to pay [...] + shipping to get the unit fixed by Samsung even though many of their units were barely 3 months old. Since then they have stopped issuing firmware updates and some Warner-Brothers BD disks have issues that require firmware updates to play correctly. Even Samsung stopped production on these in just a few months. I paid nearly 400 bones for it and it was obsolete in less than 6 months. When up-converting (DVD or Netflix Streaming) the bottom of the unit is WAY too hot to touch (even for an instant).
All these issues are common and well documented on the Internet. Even the newer Samsung Blu-ray players have way more issues than nearly any other player manufacturer. If you are a risk taker, buy one, but buy the extended warranty and hope the store will swap you because if you have to deal with Samsung service, you will be frustrated (at best).
Notice that most of the 5 star reviews were people who only owned it for a short while (it began shipping in November of 2008) and the 1 star reviews are mostly dated later (by people who used the unit long enough to experience these issues). Blu-ray is an amazing technology, but Samsung didn't/hasn't figured it out. Rather than making it right with their customers, they moved on. I will too (to a Sony, LG, Panasonic, Philips, Magnavox, Sylvania, Sharp, Insignia, Toshiba..........).

5Excellent Blu-Ray, Netflix, Pandora device  Jan 25, 2010
I've been using this Blu-Ray player now for over a year. When I first bought it I thought I would do more Netflix streaming than anything else with it. Setup was easy. There were a lot of firmware releases at first, seemed that every week there was a new one. They took a while to download and install.

I've found that I use the Pandora music feature more than anything else. It's easy to use and very high quality. The internal scaling chip makes all video look fantastic. As a result I opted to not pay extra for Blu-Ray movies from Netflix anymore because the regular DVD upscaling is so good.

It's a shame they discontinued this model, not a single problem.

2Unreliable and the last Samsung product I will own.  Jan 10, 2010
I purchased this unit when it was new, it has seen two firmware updates to add functionality I don't care about. But the functionality that I do care about (It being able to properly play a blu ray disc) they didn't update.

I recently received Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on Blu Ray.

The disc does not play properly in the player. There is a work around for it, but Samsung support says they have no plans to update the firmware to make it work without jumping through hoops. Their suggestion was to purchase a newer player. My question was how long do they support their units for. I did not get an answer for this, but suspect it is only supported for a year (While it is sold.)

The picture quality is grainy and has been since the unit was brand new. I purchased it because I had a Samsung TV which I was told would interface via anynet. Well it does, but both the TV and blu ray players had a problem within a year of their purchase.

Good luck to you if you buy a Samsung. You will need it.
Update March 5, 2010 - I just got off of a chat with Samsung tech support and they claim an update is coming. The address for status is: [...]

I am skeptical but will update again in a month. If as I suspect no update is forthcoming, I will certainly say it. But for now, I would still stay away from Samsung.

2Buyers beware-broke down in 11 months  Dec 27, 2009
I bought this blu-ray for Christmas last year, December 10th to be exact. 11 months almost to the day, it quit working, it would play regular dvd's but no longer blu-rays. I called Samsung and the personnel were very helpful. I sent it in, 10 days later I get a phone call telling me that I have to pay $87 to repair it, the "90 day" part of the warrenty is on the "labor". I huffed and puffed but I payed it, what else are you going to do? They have your $400 player. I Waited another 14 days,(which they said would take 7) finally get our player back.....it was worse than when I sent it in initially!!! Before the "repair" it would just kick out the Blu-ray saying "disc not playable" NOW it takes it, plays for a few minutes then starts this horrible groaning noise; AND it won't release the disc at all. So I have to turn it off then on and pray that I can get it back out, finally it spits it out. I call Samsung again, sent it in to a different repair place this time. That was December 12, not a word from them (I was assured this repair would only take a week) so I call tonight December 26 to find out the status. I know they have had it since December 17th because I tracked it. I'm told that on Dec 23 the service people put in a note "part on backorder" WHAT???????????? Needless to say I'm beyond angry now. I payed $400 + another $87 for this player and the parts are on backorder? The gentleman on the phone says "all I can tell you is to wait it out" Wait it out? Are you kidding me? No time frame for me at all.

So buyers beware, this player is expensive for what you are getting, we now see players for around the $100-$200 mark. To have it break down in less than a year and even they can't fix it right makes me leary about buying one from them again. We have been die hard fans of Samsung for years, we have their phones and a flat screen tv. But this player sucks! Nothing should stop working in 11 months, and they should be able to fix it if it does break!!

I'm not sure where I'm going to go from here about this situation, and I was going to wait to write this review once the problem had been resolved and we were happy cats...but now I'm MAD and I want to warn other consumers about this.

January 15, 2010......
Here is an update to my last posting of the Blu-Ray drama!...I just got off the phone with Samsung and they are going to replace the player! I don't know what was going on with the "backordered" part because this person told me that the notes said the player was "broken beyond repair". So who knows. All I know is that I am getting a new one after 2 longs months of dealing with this. Hopefully this one will work better!! ;}}}

February 1, 2010....
Well, here I am again folks! Another disappointment from Samsung. On January 21 They sent my "new" blu-ray player to the wrong place, another repair center, the first one that broke it beyond repair; can't quite figure that one out. So we contact them again, they said they would check into it. Today I get an e-mail from them stating they can no longer replace my player with the one I had. But they have a BD-P3600, which not only is $100 less than the one that I paid for but my husband and I have gone to look at reviews of this particular model and they are even worse than this one. So I'm going to contact them tomorrow to tell them I just want my money back. I would recommend to anyone looking for a Blu-ray be very cautious getting a Samsung one. They have been a huge disappointment to us. 3 months and counting.
