1The worst product and service ever!  Feb 27, 2010
I made the mistake of purchasing the Panasonic DMR-EZ485V DVD recorder in October 2009. I have had NOTHING but trouble with it. It has only been used MAYBE five or six times. It broke down after the first three uses. I kept getting an error message which the first Panasonic tech I spoke to couldn't identify but I have since learned means there is an internal problem with the machine. After it ate a new videotape which it wouldn't eject I returned it to Best Buy who sent it to the Panasonic service center. After a wait of several weeks it finally came back...WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEMS!. Same error message, same refusal to play, record or do anything. It obviously hadn't been fixed at all. Today Panasonic told me that I can return this unit for the second time, AT MY EXPENSE, and they will send me a "newer and refurbished" one. Not, mind you, a new one but a "newer" one. This whole experience has been so unpleasant and exasperating that I will NEVER buy anything by Panasonic again, despite having used their products most of my life.

4Good for the money  Dec 31, 2009
New digital media can be frustrating; changing channles takes forever and when you push the wrong buttons the unit "resets" and that can take ten to fifteen minutes. The unit functions well and the manual, thick as it is, assumes that the user is familiar with terns etc. and that's a stumbling block. However, phone support is very good. I didn't know, however, that it would not tape digital broadcasts when using the VCR function which is odd since I was able to tape with my old non-digital unit through a converter box. That's a big negative but there are few others if that doesn't bother you. Picture, sound etc, are fine. Definitely worth it or the price as longs as it lasts a while; we'll see. Haven't burned any DVDs yet though.

3Good DVR, but could be much better  Dec 30, 2009
The DMR-EZ485V firmware is slow and subject to hangups but when the unit is working correctly it does a good job. I've got a lot of issues with this unit but I'm willing to tolerate the "cluegy" firmware for the features this unit offers.

A word of advice, don't buy a new unit, buy a Panasonic refurbished unit on Amazon at half the price, it will work better because it most likely will have the latest firmware installed by Panasonic. It probably was a new unit returned by a frustrated customer who bought it new and paid twice as much!

If Panasonic wanted to expend the effort, they could have a first class product here. Unfortunately they don't seem to care.

1Don't Buy Panasonic DVD Recorder DMR-EZ485V  Dec 13, 2009
I would not buy this product again. It began freezing occasionally after about a month, and quit working completely after 2-1/2 months. Panasonic will replace the DVD recorder with a refurbished one, but I don't really care to own someone else's problem unit, and Panasonic won't even cover the costs to mail this one back.

1not worth the money  Oct 06, 2009
I've owned this model for 3 months now and really hate it. It frequently freezes when turning on which means I'm forever resetting it to use it AND not getting the shows I program it to record. What's the point of owning a DVD recorder if it doesn't record???
